Chelsea Glitter and the Graveyard on the Hill

A coming-of-age story exploring grief, identity, and the boundary between life and death through magical realism and emotional depth.

Seven days after a car crash, thirteen-year-old Chelsea Glitter finds herself trapped in a mysterious graveyard beneath a moonlit sky.
She has seven days to understand what happened. Seven days to make a choice.
But the graveyard is changing. A door appears and disappears within a yew tree. The fog seems to follow her. Stories she once imagined as a child begin to come alive.
As her final sunset approaches, Chelsea must confront a truth she has been avoiding—before the graveyard decides her fate for her.
Because in this place, denial has teeth.
And some fates are worse than death.

Award -Nominated Author & Storyteller

One of my core values as author and human, is the belief, no, the knowledge, that each of our lives is the stuff of a bestseller novel, at the very least.

What’s more, we are the co-writers and main characters in our life stories. It is our privilege to ‘train the dragons within,’ to truly become the hero, for ourselves and the world around us. May we embrace this fact, from day to precious day, cherish and nourish the roles we get to play. Lights, camera, action!

Werner Schmidt - Coach, Author, Musician - Bloemfontein, South Africa
It is such a joy to draw from my life and imagination to bring characters and stories to the world. The magic of writing, to me, is in the canvas ‘big bang’ of the first draft, then the rewriting, the crafting. Growing to know the characters, like I’m creating imaginary friends and family(!), as their voices develop with each trip through the manuscript. The rhythm, the music, the organic composition. And, then, of course, there is joy in the sharing, the embodied storytelling, the reading, the being read. What a blessing: Once upon a time …

About the Author
The first draft offers me a second living of events, imagined or real, with subsequent drafts representing the growth and sculpting process. The ‘aha’ following plot solutions arising from my writer’s walks – accompanied by family members with and without furry tails (fairy tales?) – then flowing onto the page as I sit down or stand at my keyboard. Yes, to my fellow keyboard warriors (worriers?): sitting all day long is bad for you, but so is standing! The solution? Sit and work for 45-60 minutes. Take a stretch break, acquire an enabling beverage, pat your pet iguana, and so on. Then, stand and work for 45-60 minutes. Upright posture through both cycles, shoulders back, we are the human exclamation marks! Repeat until done, or tired. Take a power nap. Yada, yada. Find your own way! The compost heap in our garden reminds me of ideas in my head or scribblings in my big black book, a first draft or rough outline. Dead leaves, twigs, remnants of fruit and vegetables cast as far away from the house as possible. This represents a putrid process with a promising future. After turning the compost regularly over a period of time, what was once dead and rotting has been transformed into something rich and nourishing, from which new life bursts forth, from an orchid or lotus flower, to a quadruple-trunk behemoth yew tree.
Paraphrasing Thich Nhat Hanh: ‘No Compost. No Lotus.’
My self-published work explores personal experience through story, with a focus on meaning, resilience, and transformation. On 9 June 2026, my magical realism novel for young adults will be published, engaging one of life’s enduring questions—what happens beyond the visible, on the other side. The aim is clear: bring this work to a wider audience through traditional publication. If you’re drawn to thoughtful, story-driven exploration—on the page or on screen—there’s something here for you. I look forward to sharing Chelsea Glitter and the Graveyard on the Hill with you, and to following Chelsea and her companions as their story unfolds—inside, and beyond, the Graveyard on the Hill.

BOOKS

"Stories may well be lies, but they are good lies that say true things, and which can sometimes pay the rent." - Neil Gaiman

A confession & a children's play

My first novella, Confessions of an alcoholic’s son, was featured in the Vrouekeur magazine, and has been read by 7 500+ readers to date. Published as autobiography, at first, I republished the book as adult fiction, during 2014 and 2017, in English and Afrikaans, as 75 Bucks and 75 Rand(Afrikaans).

I wrote and performed an interactive children’s play, Flat Anna, the froggie that stood up, in English, Afrikaans (Plat Anna) and Sesotho (Anna Sepatlapatla), the latter performed by Rita Chihawa. The play was accepted for the Free State Arts Festival as one of its first tri-lingual productions. Flat Anna’s metamorphosis to a work of fiction is underway.
